Q

Palerme JAVMA 2021

Characterization of recessed vulvas in dogs

  • % dx w/ recessed vulva?
  • recessed vulva in regards to body weight?
  • recessed vulva in regards to neuter status?
  • recessed vulva in regards to age of spay?
  • recessed vulva in regards to LUT, UTI?
A

Recessed vulvas were identified in 36 of 250 (14%) dogs.

Dogs with recessed vulvas had significantly higher body condition scores and body weights than unaffected dogs.

Recessed vulvas were more common in spayed than sexually intact dogs.

Dogs spayed at ≤ 1 year of age were almost 3 times as likely to have vulvar recession, compared with dogs spayed at > 1 year of age.

No significant difference was identified between affected and unaffected dogs with respect to the prevalence of LUT signs, urinary tract infections, or perivulvar dermatitis.

Q

Ogden Vet Sx 2020 PQ

Outcomes associated with vaginectomy and vulvovaginectomy in 21 dogs

  • most common tumors?
  • % major complications?
  • % post-op urinary incontinence? PQ
  • survival times malignant vs. benign PQ
A

Smooth muscle tumors were diagnosed most commonly (10 leiomyomata, three leiomyosarcomas, two leiomyofibromas)

Major complications requiring revision surgery were recorded in two dogs (10%).

  • Postoperative UIC occurred in 29%, resolving spontaneously within 60 days in three dogs *
  • Dogs with malignant tumors survived at least 71 days (MST 630 days). Benign tumors, time not reached (survived at least 104 days) *
