Chronic disorders
Disorders characterized by slow onset and long duration
Osteoporosis
Extensive loss of bone tissue (causes a stoop and is more common in women)
Dementia
Broad category of neurological disorder with decline in mental functioning
Alzheimer disease
Progressive irreversible brain disorder characterized by a gradual deterioration of memory, reasoning, language, and eventually, physical function
Prodromal
Earliest signs of a disorder
Parkinson disease
Chronic, progressive disorder characterized by muscle tremors, slow movement, facial paralysis (degeneration of dopamine producing neurons)
Anorexia nervosa
Eating disorder pursing thinness through starvation (less than 1% of US girls develop it)
Bulimia nervosa
Eating disorder in which the individual consistently follows a binge and purge eating pattern
Binge eating disorder
Frequent binge eating without compensatory behavior of bulimia
Aerobic exercise
Sustained activity that stimulates heart and lung functioning
