Ch 4 Appendicular Skeleton/Joints Flashcards
the appendicular skeleton contains
pectoral girdle, upper extremities, pelvic girdle, and lower extremities.
pectoral griddle
attaches UE to the axial skeleton
articulates with sternum and vertebral column
consist of clavicle and scapula
Upper extremity (UE)
the arm
consist of humerus, ulna, radius, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges
Pelvic girdle
called os coxae, innominate bone, hipbone
attaches LE to axial skeleton
articulate with sacrum posteriorly
consist of ilium, ischium, pubis
Lower extremity (LE)
the leg
consist of :
femur (thigh bone)
patella (knee cap)
tibia (shin bone)
fibula (lower leg bone)
tarsals (ankle bone)
metatarsals (foot bone)
phalanges (toe bones)
joints
formed where 2 bones meet
also called articulation
synovial joint
freely moving joint
most common
contain capsule lined with lubricant secreting synovial membrane. some contain bursa, a sac like structure
i.e ball and socket joint
cartilaginous joint
allows slight movement
hold bones firmly in place with solid piece cartilage
i.e pubic symphysis (allows pelvis to widen during birth)
fibrous joint
allow no movement
joined by thick fibrous tissue that can fuse into bone
i.e sutures of the skull
bones are held together by?
ligaments or strong bands of connective tissue
