Ch:24 The Lymphatic System Flashcards
How does lymph from the lymphatic system get transported?
There is no pump like their is in the circulatory system (heart)
- movement triggered by surrounding skeletal muscle
Fluid from tissue spaces is returned to the blood by the lymphatic system. This fluid (lymph) moves in only ONE direction- TOWARD the heart. This fluid movement is due to contraction of the surrounding skeletal muscle.
“THIS IS AN IMPORTANT POINT, SINCE UNLIKE THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM THEIR IS NO PUMP”
How are lymphatic vessels similar to veins?
They also have 3 LAYERS and have VALVES which prevent lymph back flow
Lymphatic vessels lead to specialized structures called __2 words__. These structures are filled with WBCs. Some times a person not ill has “swollen glands”. this means it is time to see an M.D. since many cancers can cause the lymph nodes to become swollen. Primary cancers of the lymph tissues are called __________.
Lymph nodes; Lymphoma
What type of cancer involves the lymph nodes?
lymphoma
What is the main purpose of the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system brings lost protein and fluids to the blood. It also takes part in immune system surveillance
Which WBC’s are present in lymph?
B-Lymphocytes, T-Lymphocytes, plasma cells, macrophages and dendritic cells
***Antibodies that are on the move are called ______.
Immunoglobins
Which WBC’s make antibodies?
B-Lymphocytes (Humoral immune system)
Where do B-Lymphocytes mature?
Where do T-Lymphocytes mature?
B-Lymphocytes = Bone marrow
T-Lymphocytes = Thymus
What are the 2 primary immune organs?
Bone marrow and Thymus
What are the 2 secondary immune organs?
Lymph nodes and Spleen
What is the main purpose of the Thymus?
The thymus is a primary lymph organ where T-cells mature (cell-mediated immunity)
- Found near the heart
- Shrinks after puberty
- Produces growth factors that stimulate proliferation and the differentiation of the T-Lymphocytes
What is the main purpose of the spleen?
- Stores a reserve of blood “blood reservoir”
- Largest accumulation of lymph tissue in the body
- Graveyard of old, worn out RBCs
- Produces B and T-Lymphocytes
“THINK OF THIS ORGAN AS A LARGE LYMPH NODE”
*** If you ever lose your spleen either by pathology or accident, the liver, lymph nodes, and bone marrow can complete it’s function
