Originally a vassal family of Shang China, possibly Turkic in origin, overthrew the Shang and established second Chinese dynasty that flourished from 1122 to 256 B.C.E.
How did the Zhou Dynasty rule china? How did this contribute to its eventual downfall?
As China’s “feudal period”, the Zhou dynasty relied on an alliance system with local rulers, making the central government weak. Eventual downfall was caused by regional disloyalties, when land-owning aristocrats solidified power base and disregarded the central gov.
Contributions of the Zhou Dynasty
- extended territory by encouraging settlers to move into the Yangzi River Valley, which would become the “Middle Core” or the center of China.
- invented Mandate of Heaven
- promoted greater cultural unity by discouraging primitive religious practices, and setting a standard spoken language (Mandarin)z
