Ch. 18 Flashcards
Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)
Largest cause of death 15-49. Destroys immune system but is not itself deadly.
Acute effect
Immediate or rapid harmful reaction to an exposure, ranging from dizziness to death.
Anopheles mosquito
Transmits malaria
Antagonistic interaction
Reduce harmful effects
Carcinogens Ex.
Arsenic, benzene, vinyl chloride, chromium, PCBs, and chemicals in tobacco smoke.
Comparative risk analysis
Most serious ecological and health problems according to scientists.
Hormone blockers
Disrupt the endocrine system by preventing natural hormones such as androgens (male sex hormones) from attaching to their receptors.
Hormone mimics / Hormonally active agents (HAA)
Synthetic chemicals that mimic hormones and disrupt endocrine system. (DDT, PCBs, atrazine and other herbicides, aluminum, mercury, bisphenol-A, and phthalates.)
Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Causes AIDS, transmitted by unsafe sex sharing infected needles passing it on to offspring and exposure to infected blood. Found mostly in India, south Africa, and most of sub-saharan Africa.
Influenza / flu
Virus that kills the most people, transmitted by body fluids or airborne emissions of an infected person.
Kaposi’s sarcoma
Rare cancer caused by AIDS that causes lesions.
Metastasis
Malignant cells break off from tumors and travel in body fluids to other parts of the body.
Methyl isocyanate (MIC)
Used to produce carbamate pesticides, released during Bhopal incident. Formed cyanide gas in the atmosphere.
