Ch 16 Lymphatic System Flashcards
CH 16
What is the lymphatic system functions?
TRANSPORT, ABSORB, DEFEND
-transport interstitial fluid from interstitial spaces & return back
-absorb LIPIDS from Digestive System & put back to BLOOD STREAM
-defend against body diseases
Describe the lymphatic path way
(hint: 7 key words)
STARTs with lymphatic capillaries that turn into lymphatic vessels and then become even bigger to turn into LARGE lymphatic vessels so it can merge into a lymphatic trunk. From the trunk it contains COllecting ducts, with both combined it creates veins to the THORAX
What is the function of lymphatic capillaries?
tiny vessels that collect and filter fluid from your body’s cells and tissues.
List some of the characteristics of lymphatic capillaries
-microscopic
-thin walled
-Made from simple squamous epithelium
-NETWORKS PARALLEL to blood capillaries throughout body
what comes next after lymphatic capillary ?
Lymphatic vessels
Once inside lymphatic capillary it is called _____
LYMPH
Similar to wall of veins (just a bit thinner)
What am I?
Lymphatic Vessels
What is the function of lymphatic vessels?
CARRY fluid (lymph) throughout the body to (next destination) Lymph NODES & back to blood
what are the three layers of the lymphatic vessel composed of ? From Innest to Outtest
INN : ENDOthelial LININ G
MID : smooth muscle & elastic fiber
OUT : Connective Tissue
Allows one way flow
Lymphatic Vessels
What aids in the flow of lymph
The contraction of smooth muscle within the large lymphatic vessels
What sends lymph from the abdomen to the thorax?
Respiratory Process
what contracts the flow of lymph in lymphatic vessels
SKELETAL MUSCLE contraction
Lymphatic tissue contains what?
-lymphocytes
-macrophages
-other cells
The thymus secrets what hormone for what?
THymosin hormone to mature t lymphocyte development. T cells are used to provide immunity
