Ch 13 Flashcards
Meninges
three connective tissue coverings that surround that brain and spinal cord
Dura Mater
-outer most layer
- anchors the meninges with the spinal canal
- (epidermal space) lies outside the Dura that is filed with fat and other connective tissue.
Arachnoid Mater
- middle layer
- (subdural space) lies outside of arachnoid mater contains interstitial fluid.
Pia Mater
- covers surface of the brain and Spinal cord.
- (subdural space) lies outside of the pia and contains CSF.
Outer region
- mostly white matter (myelinated fibers) provides nerves impulse transmission to and from the brain.
- contains posterior, lateral and anterior columns; anterior median fissure; posterior median sulcus
Inner region
- contains grey matter (non-myelinated neurons)
- note: outer portion of brain contains grey matter white white matter is deep.
- provides integrative functions; has anterior/posterior horns.
- Gray commissure and Central Canal filled with CSF.
Reflex
a fast, involuntary response to a particular stimulus
Reflex Arch
the pathway followed by nerve impulses that produce a reflex components
Connective Tissue Coverings:
Endoneurium
surrounds individual nerve
Connective Tissue Coverings:
Perineurium
surrounds bundles of nerve fibers
Fascicle= bundle of nerve fibers
Plexus
a network of nerves
ventral rami
Cervical Plexus (C1-C5)
Phrenic Nerve (C3-C5) which innervates the Diaphragm
(Kill phrenic nerve can’t breathe on your own)
Phrenic Nerve (C3-C5) which innervates the Diaphragm
(Kill phrenic nerve can’t breathe on your own)
supplies innervation to the shoulder and upper limb.
Lumbar Plexus (L1-L4)
supplies part of the abdominal walls, external genitalia, and part of the proximal lower limb
Sacral Plexus (L4-S4)
Supplies innervation to the lower limb
