A

-period after the civil war where northern leaders created plans on how to govern the south and let them rejoin the union
-caused a lot of southern resentment
-Lincoln was president and had a plan but was assassinated

Whats going on in the south

A

-most of the fighting done in the south so devastated
-attacked railroads and farms to cut off supplies
-1/3 of white men were killed or wounded
-major cities burned to the ground
-poor white southerners and freedmen need jobs
-poor whites shared economic competition with freedmen because freedmen would work for less and do a better job since they were making money

A

-causes turmoil and confusion
-lincoln probably had the skill to make the reconstruction more smooth
-laid out foundation for reconstruction

10% plan

A

-southerners who weren’t in politics could swear allegiance and take oath and when 10 % of the registered voter pledged and took oath they would be reentered
-death of lincoln made this difficult
-radical republicans wanted to punish south because they blamed them for the death of their family and the war, and they wanted to push for political and economical rights for freedmen
-TN, LA, and Arkansas all tried to reenter with plan but radical republicans thought it was too easy and denied it
-Lincoln wasn’t there to convince them to let them in

Wade Davis Act

A

-put forth by radical republicans, stated that majority of voters had to take oath in order to reenter
-Felt only way to let them back in is if they enfranchise african americans
-Lincoln pocket vetoes stating its too harsh

Jim Crowe Laws

A

-southern legislature fed into republican suspicions when they learned about jim Crow Laws
-character, not a real person
-made freedmen sign yearly contract to work, if refused then they went to jail where they were sometimes worked to death
-restricted movement and outlawed interracial marriage

Andrew Johnson

A

-southerner wanted to be more lenient
-followed 10% plan and gave southerners pardon
-didn’t want any confederate soldiers or property owners over $20,000 to be pardoned
-Johnson was self made and didn’t like rich people
-rich man’s war but a poor person’s fight- more leniant to the poor
-makes states recognize that succession and slavery are illegal
-turns eye to the black codes- southern sympathizer

efforts to help freedman

A

-ex confederates reentering union angers radical republicans becuase they know about black codes
-Congress rejects Johnson’s reconstruction plan and issues Freedmens Bureau which gives freed slaves employment and education
-most former slaves worked on the same plantation under their former owners as tenant farmers where they worked on land for food and shelter
-radical republicans split- help politically and vote or economic help and independence
-take land from wealthy landowners and distribute it to former slaves

Congress Joint Committee

A

-Johnson and Congress don’t get along, so congress calls a joint committee to investigate the south
-pass civil rights act and Johnson vetoes
-most people are moderate but after Johnson got drunk at a party and called republicans traitors people went towards republicans
-COngress can override veto if 2/3 agree, overrode freedmen’s bureau and civil rights act
-13th amendement outlaws slavery
