genetic condition seeing mutation to CFTR gene
affects all body secretions
excess sticky mucous that can build up in lungs and digestive system causing breathing difficulties
why are suspected CF ptx sweat tested
CF ptx sweat has a greater salt content than normal
symptoms of CF
repeated chest infections , cough , poor weight gain and diarhoea
why should antibiotic prescriptions be avoided for CF ptx
to prevent antibiotic resistance as they rely on antibiotics for chest infections which may happen frequently
biggest known cause of lung cancer
smoking
2 main groups of lung cancer
small cell
non small cell - includes large cell , adenocarcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas
obstructive sleep apnoea and cause
airway obstruction in sleep for 10s or more
loss of muscle tone allows tongue to fall back against pharynx blocking airway
mandibular advancement appliance
possible treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea
pulls mandible forwards opening airway , uncomfy for ptx
continuous positive airway pressure
possible treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea
maintains pressure at all times therefore blowing apart tongue and pharynx
what questions should you ask yourself if a ptx is having an expected asthma attack
can they talk in sentences/ communicate
are they using accessory muscles to breath i.e are arms pinned back
what is there respiratory rate
