what menstrual and gynaecologist history do you need to know?
last smear
first day of last menstrual period
contraception
what equipment do you need?
light source
trolley with speculum, cervical broom, solution bottle
gloves
request form modesty blanket
what position do you need the patient in?
undress to the waist down
blanket to cover
dorsal position - knees up, feet together, relax out
how do you introduce the speculum?
move the labia ask them to bare down and cough gloves insert at night angle to final position insert and gentry rotate open gently locate cervix using speculum
what do you do with the cervix?
note the appearance - parity, polyps, cervitis, duplication
take smear - point in OS, rotate broom 5 times
how do you rinse the broom?
dip into the cytology solution
make sure you took the lid off when you got the equipment ready
cap on tightly - black to black
how do you remove the speculum?
withdraw slightly before closing
allow vaginal walls to contract it shut
what documentation needs to be done?
label the vial
cytology form
what’d o you do if you’re also doing a bimanual exam?
take the smear first because the lube can mess with the results
