A nonprogressive impairment of motor function, muscle control, coordination, and posture.

what does it abnormally cause
A
- abnormal perception and sensation; visual, hearing, and speech impairments; seizures; and cognitive disabilities.
- CP manifests differently in each child.
- Developmental outcomes vary and are dependent on the severity of the injury.

nursing care
A
- Maintain an open airway by elevating the head of the child’s bed.
- Ensure suction equipment is available if required.
- Monitor for pain (especially with muscle spasms)
- Administer medication for pain and/or spasms.
- Ensure adequate nutrition.
- Assess for the possibility of aspiration for children who are severely disabled.
- Administer feedings by gastric tube as prescribed.
- Maintain weight/height chart.
- Assess skin under splints and braces if applicable.

interprofessional care
A
- Coordinate care with speech, physical and recreational therapists
- Initiate referral for technical aids that can assist with coordination, speaking, mobility, and an increased level of independence.
- Some children can benefit from the use of a voice-activated wheelchair.
- Surgical intervention is indicated for tendon release to correct contractures or other spastic deformities.

- Reinforce the therapeutic plan of care.
● Reinforce the need for rest periods.
● Reinforce feeding schedule and feeding techniques if changes were made during hospitalization.
● Reinforce adherence to medication regimen.
● Encourage regular dental care.
● Encourage parents to provide developmental stimulation.

● Teach the family and client about ankle-foot orthoses if prescribed.
● Teach self-urinary catheterization if needed.
● Teach pulmonary hygiene techniques.

● Suggest participation in a support group for CP.
