Cerebellum Flashcards
What is the main function of the cerebellum?
Aid in coordination and balance
Where does input from the contralateral cortex enter the cerebellum?
Middle cerebellar peduncle
Where does ipsilateral proprioceptive information enter the cerebellum?
Via interferior cerebellar peduncle from spinal cord
What are the deep nuclei of the cerebellum from lateral to medial?
Dentate, Emboliform, Globose, Fastigial
What are the output fibers of the cerebellum?
Purkinje fibers
Where does the cerebellum send information to?
To contralateral cortex.
Through what pathway does the cerebellum send information?
Purkinje fibers –> deep nuclei –> superior cerebellar peduncle –> contralateral cortex
What do lateral lesions of the cerebellum cause?
Controls voluntary movement of extremities: lesions cause propensity of fall toward ipsilateral side.
What do medial lesions of the cerebellum cause?
Truncal ataxia; wide-based cerebellar gait. Nystagmus, head tilting. Generally, bilateral and proximal limb deficits.
