Cells Of The Brain Flashcards
Neuron
The single cell of the brain. It runs on chemical electricity. There are 100 billion nerve cells/neurons in the brain
Parts of the neuron
Cell body Axon Myelin Terminal buttons Synapse Neurotransmitter fluid Dendrite
Cell body
Main part of the neuron. Starts or strengthens the electrical impulses
(Torso)
Axon
Arm-like structure extending away from cell body (right arm)
Myelin
Fatty tissue surrounding the axon. Insulates and protects the axon (sheath). Cannot grow back once lost. Ex: anorexia/bulimia- choice
MS- Disorder
Terminal buttons
Fluid filled sacs at the end of the axon, contains brain chemicals
Synapse
The gap between 2 neurons
Neurotransmitter fluid
Brain chemicals, passes the “message” to the next neuron
Change chemical=change behavior
Dendrite
Tree ranch structure DETECTS incoming chemical message (left arm)
Types of neurotransmitters
Serotonin
Melatonin
Dopamine
Acetylcholine
Serotonin
Master chemical of the brain, helps all the other chemicals work.
Drop= depression/anxiety
Excess= OCD/anorexia
Melatonin
Sleep chemical, starts the sleeping process
Drop= insomnia
Dopamine
Controls mood, hunger, pleasure, attention, fine motor control.
Drop= Parkinson’s disease
Excess= schizophrenia
Acetylcholine
Controls the function of internal organs. Also encodes memory.
Drop= Alzheimer’s
