Hindbrain

A

ANIMAL INSTINCTS

4 MAJOR PARTS

  • Cerebellum
  • Medulla
  • Pons
  • Reticular formation

(Pons, medulla, and reticular formation all make up the BRAIN STEM)

16
Q

Cingulate cortex

A

Has 4 regions!

Regulates emotions, pain and thought patterns

Ex. Depression/schizophrenia

17
Q

The sensory cortex

A

Contained within the parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes.

Helps process info received from the thalamus.

Somatosensory cortex: bi- lateral (both sides) Processes pain/heat/ pressure from skin

18
Q

Motor cortex

A

Bi laterally contained in the frontal lobes

Initiates and controls bodily movement

19
Q

The association cortex

A

Bi laterally contained in the frontal lobes.

Works to integrate sensory and motor skills

20
Q

The speech centers

A

LEFT hemisphere only!

Wernicke’s area allows us to understand language

Broca’s area allows us to produce speech
