Cell Structure and Function: Organelles and Cell Membrane Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic cell?
Animal and plant cells, inc. fungi and algae.
What is the structure of a eukaryotic cell?
1) . Plasma membrane (cell surface).
2) . Nucleus.
3) . Endoplasmic reticulum.
4) . Ribosomes.
5) . Lysosomes.
6) . Golgi body.
7) . Mitochondria.
What is the plasma membrane?
Found on the surface of animal cells.
What is the plasmic membrane made up of?
Lipids and proteins.
What is the function of plasma membrane?
Regulates the movement of substances into and out of cells (manufacture and transport).
What is the nucleus?
Found in the middle of a cell.
What does the nucleus contain?
Chromosomes (containing DNA).
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls the cells activities.
What is the mitochondria?
Oval-shaped organelle.
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Energy is extracted from food through metabolism.
What is the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Membranes enclosing a fluid-filled space.
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Folds and processes proteins that have been made at the ribosomes (packaging and processing).
What is a ribosome?
Organelle that floats in the cytoplasm, or is attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum.
What is the function of a ribosome?
Production of proteins.
What is a lysosome?
Round organelle, a type of golgi vesicle.
