Cardiovascular System Flashcards
Which side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs?
Right.
Which side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body?
Left.
Why is the left ventricle thicker than the right?
Because it needs to contract powerfully to pump blood around the whole body.
What is the order of cardiac contractions, on the right side of the heart?
1) . Superior/inferior vena cava.
2) . Right atrium.
3) . Tricuspid valve.
4) . Right ventricle.
5) . Pulmonary valve.
6) . Pulmonary artery.
7) . Lungs (to be oxygenated).
What is the order of cardiac contractions, on the left side of the heart?
1) . Pulmonary vein.
2) . Left atrium.
3) . Bicuspid (mitral) valve.
4) . Left ventricle.
5) . Aortic valve.
6) . Aorta.
What are the 3 layers of the heart wall?
- Pericardium (outside layer).
- Epicardium (fluid in between tissue and wall).
- Myocardium (cardiac muscle).
- Endocardium (cardiac tissue).
What is the pericardium?
Fluid filled sac surrounding the heart and the ends of major vessels (aorta, vena cava and pulmonary artery).
What is the myocardium?
Cardiac muscle tissue responsible for forcing blood out of heart chambers.
What is the endocardium?
Consists of epithelial and connective tissue that contains elastin and collagen fibres.
Where do arteries carry blood?
Away from the heart to the rest of the body.
Where do veins carry blood?
Back to the heart.
What is the size of lumen in arteries, capillaries and veins?
1) . Arteries = small.
2) . Veins = large.
3) . Capillaries = small.
What is the thickness of the artery, capillary and vein walls?
1) . Arteries = thick.
2) . Veins = thin.
3) . Capillaries = thin.
What is the pressure of blood in arteries, capillaries and veins?
1) . Arteries = high.
2) . Veins = low.
3) . Capillaries = low.
What direction do capillaries carry blood?
Towards the tissue.
