Cell Membrane Permeability - Practical Flashcards
1
Q
Why is beetroot used
A
Contains coloured pigment
2
Q
What happens to the colour intensity as permeability increases
A
More pigment leaks out of cell membrane
So colour intensity increases
3
Q
What is the independent variable
A
Temp
4
Q
Outline the method
A
- Use scalpel to cut 5 equal sized pieces of beetroot
- Rinse pieces to remove any pigment released when cutting plants
- Add to 5 different test tubes contains 5cm3 water
- Place each test tube in a water bath at different temps for the same amount of time
- Remove solid beetroot
- Transfer liquid into cuvette and put through calorimeter
- Measure it’s absorbance
5
Q
The calorimeter says it has a higher absorbance. What does that mean
A
More pigment has been released so the membrane was more permeable
