Cell Junctions Flashcards
What are the three types of cell junctions?
Tight junctions
Desmosomes
Gap junctions
What do tight junctions connect?
Adjacent epithelial cells
Where are tight junctions found?
Epithelium lining the intestine
What do desmosomes do?
Hold cells together and strengthen connections of adjacent cells
Where are desmosomes found?
Between epithelial cells that need to withstand physical stress (eg skin)
Where are gap junctions found?
Between adjacent cells (communication junctions)
How are desmosomes formed?
Interlocking proteins that are resistant to twisting and stretching
How do gap junctions work?
Proteins called connexons form small channels that allow ions and small molecules to move between cells
