Cell Division Flashcards
Needs for cell division
Growth, wound repair, asexual reproduction
What must happen before a cell divides
Duplicate organelles
Replicate DNA
Go through cell cycle checkpoints
Grow to sufficient size
What phases make up interphase?
G1, S, G2
G1
Normal activities of the cell are performed
S
DNA synthesis
This is when DNA doubles
G2
additional cell growth, organelles are replicated
When do the number of chromosomes double?
Anaphase
How long is one cell cycle?
Around 24 hours
How do microtubules move chromosomes?
kinectochore fibers break down the microtubules which shortens them
and this pulls the chromosomes apart
Chromosome
single double stranded DNA sequence (before S)
composed of chromatin
What happens after DNA replication?
There are two sister chromatids but still one chromosome
2 double strands
What are 2 sister chromatids held together at?
centromere
What happens during anaphase?
2 sister chromatids are separated which creates 2 different chromosomes each with 1 sister chromatid
Why do cells want to condense DNA?
So it can fit into nucleus and be sorted and separated
