Cell Basics Flashcards
What is a cell?
The smallest units that fulfill all of the criteria for life
Functions of the cell
- contain genetic info
- reproduce
- related and have evolved
- metabolism (make molecules)
- extract energy and use it for work
- regulate internal environment
Can eukaryotes be single celled?
yes, like yeast
however, most are multicellular
cytoplasm
cytosol and organelles
organelle
membrane bound structure (except ribosome)
specific structure and purpose
Differences in plant and animal cells
plants have chloroplasts, central vacoule, and cell walls
pH of the inside of lysosomes
acidic
What does the golgi apparatus do?
Sugar taps lipids and products from the smooth ER
packages and sends lipids
What do vacuoles do?
isolate toxins
What do perioxisomes do?
Break down fatty acids / lipids
contain digestive enzymes
How large is the mitochondria?
Size of prokaryote
Endosymbiosis
at one point mitochondria and chloroplasts were there own prokaryotic organisms until absorbed into cell
backed up by size, presence of DNA and ribosomes
What does the cytoskeleton do?
Allows for movement of subcellular materials
consists of protein fibers that support and shape the cell
