CB6 Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the summary word and symbol equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide (6CO2) + water (6H2O) -> glucose (C6H12O6) + oxygen (6O2)
What is the waste product of photosynthesis?
Oxygen
What is meant by photosynthesis being an endothermic reaction?
It requires an input of energy from the environment.
What organelle allows plants and algae to photosynthesise?
Chloroplast
What pigment enables an organism to photosynthesise?
Chlorophyll
What is the function of chlorophyll?
Absorbs the energy carried by light.
What are the 5 uses of glucose produced by photosynthesis in a plant?
Aerobic respiration, stored as starch, used to build cellulose for cell walls, turned into proteins for growth, stored as lipids in seeds
What are 3 possible limiting factors of the rate of photosynthesis?
Light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, temperature
What is meant by a limiting factor?
A factor that is in short supply and limits the rate of a reaction e.g. photosynthesis.
What is the relationship between light intensity and the rate of photosynthesis?
As light intensity increases so does the rate of photosynthesis until another factor (e.g. temperature or carbon dioxide concentration) becomes limiting.
What is the relationship between carbon dioxide concentration and the rate of photosynthesis?
As carbon dioxide concentration increases so does the rate of photosynthesis until another factor (e.g. temperature or light intensity) becomes limiting.
What is the relationship between temperature and the rate of photosynthesis?
Up to the optimum temperature, as temperature increases so does the rate of photosynthesis. Beyond the optimum temperature, as temperature increases the rate of photosynthesis decreases.
How does a high rate of photosynthesis cause hydrogencarbonate indicator to turn purple?
High rate of photosynthesis (above the rate of aerobic respiration) lowers the carbon dioxide concentration which increases the pH.
How does a low rate of photosynthesis cause hydrogencarbonate indicator to turn yellow?
Low rate of photosynthesis (below the rate of aerobic respiration) raises the carbon dioxide concentration which decreases the pH.
What is the relationship between light intensity and the distance from a light source?
Inversely proportional - as distance from a light source increases, light intensity decreases
What is formula for calculating the relative light intensity at a distance from a light source?
1 ÷ (distance)²
