CB2 the Nervous System Flashcards
(21 cards)
What are the 2 parts of the human nervous system?
Central nervous system (CNS), peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What are the 2 parts of the central nervous system?
Brain, spinal cord
What are the 3 types of neurone?
Sensory, relay, motor
What travels through a neurone/axon?
Electrical impulse.
What is the purpose of the sensory neurone?
To transmit an electrical impulse from the receptor to the central nervous system
How does a signal pass from one neurone to another?
(Four steps, 5 key words)
- The electrical impulse stimulates the release of a neurotransmitter into the synapse
- The neurotransmitters diffuses across the gap,
- and bind to receptors on the next neurone,
- which stimulates an electrical impulse.
What is the function of a receptor?
Detect a stimulus
What is the order of neurones in a reflex arc?
Sensory, relay, motor
What type of neurone is attached to a receptor?
Sensory
What type of neurone is found in the central nervous system?
Relay
What type of neurone is attached to an effector?
Motor
What are the 2 types of effector?
Muscle, gland
What is the action of an effector called?
Response
What is the purpose of a reflex arc?
React very quickly to prevent** harm**
What is the gap between 2 neurones called?
Synapse
By what process do neurotransmitters travel across the synapse?
Diffusion
What type of neurone is this?
Sensory Neurone
The cell body is half way down and it has a myelin sheath
Label the axon and the dendron
dendron - on the left carrying the impulse **towards **the cell body
axon - on the right carrying the impulse away from the cell body
What type of neurone is this?
Motor neurone
The cell body is at one end and it has a myelin sheath
Name parts K and L from this diagram
K - Myelin Sheath
L - Axon
What type of neurone is this?
Relay neurone
Very short, lots of dendrites and axom terminals
