CB3 DNA Flashcards
What is the role of the enzyme in extracting DNA from cells?
The enzyme breaks down proteins in the membrane around the cells and around the nuclei.
Put the following in order of size, smallest to largest: gene, chromosome, genome, nucleotide
Nucleotide, gene, chromosome, genome.
What are genes, chromosomes and genome all made from?
DNA.
What is a monomer?
A single repeating unit that when joined together, forms a polymer.
What is a polymer?
A long chain of monomers.
What shape is a DNA molecule?
Double helix.
What is the monomer of a DNA molecule?
Nucleotide.
What are the 3 parts of a DNA nucleotide?
Phosphate, sugar, base.
What are the 4 DNA bases?
Adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine.
What DNA base does adenine pair with?
Thymine.
What DNA base does cytosine pair with?
Guanine.
What bond is between the complementary DNA base pairs?
Hydrogen Bonds.
What is the role of the salt in extracting DNA from cells?
It causes the DNA to clump together.
What is the role of the detergent in extracting DNA from cells?
It breaks down the cell surface and nuclear membranes.
What is the role of cold ethanol in extracting DNA from cells?
It causes the DNA to precipitate.
