CB1 Cell Transport Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The net movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration (down the concentration gradient).
What is osmosis?
The net movement of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration (down the concentration gradient) across a partially permeable membrane.
Describe the water and solute concentrations of a dilute solution.
High water concentration, low solute concentration
Describe the water and solute concentrations of a concentrated solution.
Low water concentration, high solute concentration
When water enters a plant cell by osmosis it becomes __________.
Turgid
When water leaves a plant cell by osmosis it becomes __________.
Flaccid
What will happen to the mass of a cell if is placed in a solution with a higher concentration of solute than the cell itself?
Mass will decrease (as water will leave the cell by osmosis).
What will happen to the mass of a cell if it is placed in a solution with a lower concentration of solute than the cell itself?
Mass will increase (as water will enter the cell by osmosis).
What will happen to the mass of a cell if is placed in a equally concentrated solution?
No change in mass (as there will be equal movement of water in and out of the cell by osmosis).
