Cardiology Heart dz Flashcards
Stroke Volume
The volume of blood ejected from the heart during each beat
Cardiac Output
HR x SV = CO
The volume of blood ejected from the heart per minute
Pre-load
Amount of pressure stretching the RV after passive filling and contraction
After-load
Amount of pressure the chamber has to generate to eject blood from the heart
Heart dz
Abnormality in the heart that can lead to heart failure ->reverse of caught in time
Signs of heart dz
Tachycardia
Tachepnia
Exercise intolerance
Enlarge heart = cardiac cough -> dry & unproductive
Heart failure
Unable to maintain cardiac output
Signs of heart failure
Extreme fatigue
Sianosis
Cachexia
Orthopnea
Left side heart failure
Pulmonary edema
Right side heart failure
Ascites
3 ways the heart will compensate
- Increase the heart rate -> 2-3x normal
- Chambers become hypotrophied ->thick muscle volume decrease
- Chambers will dialate -> flasid
Diagnostic tests for heart dz
Auscultation Echo Blood pressure Atrial blood gas analysis Pulse oximetry Radiographs ECG
Patent Ductus Arteriosis
Congenital heart dz
Main source of murmur
Atrial Septal Defect
Defect or hole in the enteratrial septum
Soft systolic murmur
Ventricle Septal Defect
Enterventricular septum
Causes diastolic murmur
Aortic & Pulmonary Stenosis
Congenital heart dz
AV insufficiency
Acquired heart dz
As the pt. ages, the AV valve shrink a little
Heartworm
Acquired heart dz
Primarily in right ventricle and pulmonary artery
Vegetative Endocarditis
Acquired heart dz
Bacterial infection that leads to systemic bacterimea, settles on AV valve then scars, piece breaks off and leads to septic embolism
Major cause = poor dental health
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Acquired heart dz
Causes: taurine def. in maine coons
Results in a thick myocardium chamber capacity
Dialated cardiomyopathy
Acquired heart dz
Thin myocardium with large dialated chambers
2nd complications to atrial fibrillation
Common breeds: Boxers, Danes, Dobermans, Cockers, Goldens, St. Bernards, Irish Wolfhounds
Pericarditis
Inflammation of pericardium 2nd to: General infection Metastatic dz Kidney dz/failure Trauma or can be idiopathic Auscultation: muffled heart sounds, weak & thready pulse; very painful, dyspnic
