Cardiology Flashcards
Pericardium
Outer layer, fibroserous outer layer
Fibrous
Forms the attachment of vessels to heart muscle
Serous
Lines the epicardium
Epicardium
Protective outer covering of the heart muscle, secrets serous fluid
Myocardium
The muscle of the heart
Thickest at left ventricle
Endocardium
Lines the heart chambers - inner layer of the heart
Functions of the cardio system
- Pumps blood
- Maintains blood pressure within vessels
- Ensures proper perfusion of tissues
Why is normal BP so important?
- O2 and nutrient distribution
- Removes waste products
- Delivery of hormones
Systole
Contraction of the heart muscles
Diastole
Relaxation of the heart muscle
Sinoatrial Node – SA node
A.k.a –Pace maker
Located in the wall of the R atriam where the vena cava enters. Initiates the electrical impulse that stimulates contractions
Atrioventricular Node – AV node
The traffic cop
Located in enteratrial septum. Transfers impulse down to the bundle of HIS. Responsible for slight delay in conduction which allows for complete filling of ventricles
Bundle of HIS
Located right at the entrance of ventricle. Transfers impulse from AV node to the bundle of branches
L and R bundle branches
Located in the myocardium of the ventricles, transfer impulse to purkinje fibers
Purkinje fibers
Enervates the myocardium
