Cardiac Infections Flashcards
What are the signs of septicemia
fever, tachycardia, tachypnea, elevated leukocyte count (SIRS) systemic immune response syndrome.
what are the 2 most common causes of septicemia in newborns
Strep B and Ecoli
what r the 2 most common causes of septicemia in children
strep pneumo and Neisseria
what r the 2 most common causes of septicemia in adults
staph aureas, strep pneumo
what are the tests u would order for septicemia
blood cultures, CBC, urine CSF cultures, wound cultures
how would u rx sepsis
support, admit IV & Abx
Whats the most common cause for Rheumatic Fever
2-3 wks. following a strep pyogenes pharyngitis infection (beta lysis)
what is the hallmark rash seen in pts with Rheumatic Fever
erythema marginatum
a + throat culture for strep pyogenes and an elevated antistreptolysin (ASO) would indicate
Rheumatic fever
how would u rx rheumatic fever
bed rest, salicylates, IM penicillin, macrolide if allergic.
Whats most common cause of endocarditis
strep Viridans, some staph aureas
Describe endocarditis
growth occurs within heart valves/chambers (organisms/fibrin/platelets)
What are classic features of endocarditis
fever, murmur
Before getting blood culture results back, you’d want to start rx pt right away with
empiric abx for staph, strep, and enterococci
this heart disease is almost 80-90% idiopathic, otherwise most common is viral
acute pericarditis
