Carbohydrates, lipids and proteins Flashcards
Insoluble substances
Starch, proteins and fats.
Carbohydrates
Made up of units of sugar. They contain chemical elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Complex carbs
Made up of a long chain of simple sugar units bonded together. (Starch and cellulose)
Simple Sugars
Contain only one or two units of sugar. E.g. glucose
The structure of lipid
3 fatty acids are joined to the glycerol molecule.
Function of lipids
- energy
- important in nervous system
- important in cell membranes
Lipid is insoluble in…
water.
As the fatty acids change…
cause some lipids to be solid or liquid. Glycerol does not change.
All nutrients are made up of…
carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Protein molecule
Is made up of a long chain of amino acids.
Amino acids can join…
in different ways to form different proteins.
Proteins are folded…
to form shapes that are related to their different functions. (enzymes, hormones, antibodies)
Protein denaturation
When the shape of a protein is lost because bonds holding the protein molecule are broken.
