!! Cancer Flashcards
what causes a tumour to develop
growth by mitosis tightly controlled, DNA in nucleus telling cells when to divide and when to stop
sometimes, changes take place in these genes leading to uncontrolled growth and mitosis, producing a tumour
2 types of tumour
benign
malignant
what are benign tumours
growths of abnormal cells which are found in one area
usually contained by a membrane, therefore don’t invade other parts of the body
how to malignant spread
malignant cells invade neighbouring tissues and move into the bloodstream
then spread to different parts of the body and form new tumours, called secondary tumours
risk factors of cancer, just names not explained
genetics
lifestyle
substances in our enviroment
how can lifestyle increase the likelihood of developing cancer
lung cancer linked to smoking
skin cancer from exposure to UV light, e.g through sunbathing
mouth and throat cancer linkedd to alcohol
how can substances in your environment increase the likelihood of developing cancer
e.g radon increase risk of developing lung cancer
as it releases ionising radiation which damages the DNA in cells
which can cause them to ubcontrolable cell division
how can genetic increase the likelihood of developing cancer
inherit an increased risk to certian cancers
e.g prostate cancer, large intestine cancer and certian types of breast cancer
