Byzantine dress, although originally based on Roman dress, had such a definite oriental flavour.
Garments became richly decorated and embroidered. Large numbers of pearls were used in crowns and other jewellery.
Women frequently wore wide Byzantine collars, studded with jewels. The Roman fibula gave way to a jewelled brooch (figure 42, Laver).
Soft leather shoes were worn, frequently red for the women.
Silk became the favourite textile fibre.
