burges shale geology Flashcards

1
Q

what are the burgess shale

A

marine fauna widespread in camrbian seas found in greenland, canada, china, siberia and australia

are fossils 23000 above sea in near perfect preservation

plate tecontincs moved to form super contienents in the ocean basis resulting in mountains

Q

cambrian area

A

Laurentia in north american had been seperated from pansiotia

no birds in sky or plants an animals on land
all lif ein ocean
high erosion rates, sand thicknessa nd carbonate reefs
trofipical sea rich in nutrients and biological activity

Q

cathedral formation

A

carbonate reefs produced by algae resulted in the catherdal formation

flucture of contienent crust from deep to shallwo water resulted in the kinkinhouse rim; submairse cliff of 160 m made up the catherdal formation

deep seeded faults, hydrothermal fluids, and slow/instability= home to the marine burgess shale fauna

Q

fossilization

A

2 million year process where storms and mudflows filled the catherdal escapment with mud to form the shales and preserved foissils which protected by carbonate cliff from heat and pressure

Q

mountain building

A

tectonic plates moved sdiments to form rocky mountains (n american plate pushed against pacirif ocean plate to create a subduction zone)

colission with volcanic island caused DEFORMATION and more mountain building

then 45 mya more plates movements resulted in RELAXATION

ersosion rom wind, water, glaciers in mountains during ice age

then a warmer interglacial cycle exposed the fossils on the burgess shale
