Buddhism- Three Marks of Existence Flashcards
What are the three marks of existence?
Three truths that Buddhist’s believe apply to everyone.
What is annica?
The idea that nothing stays the same - impermanence.
What is anatta?
Non-self - the belief we have no permanent self or soul.
What is dukkah?
Suffering.
How does annica influence Buddhist’s?
Nothing is permanent, the universe is constantly changing so Buddhist’s avoid becoming attached to things.
How does anatta influence Buddhist’s?
We as humans are constantly changing, Buddhist’s say the idea of ‘you’ or ‘self’ is an illusion.
How does Dukkha influence Buddhist’s?
Suffering is unavoidable, therefore they will not chase after ineffective solutions like wealth.
What is the story about Annica?
Kisa Gotami and the mustard seed.
What happens in the story of Annica?
Kisa Gotami’s child has just died, she was devastated. She asked the Buddha to help her bring her child back to life. The Buddha told her that to help her she must get a mustard seed from a family that had not known death. She couldn’t. As she heard the stories of the different families her pain was lessened. This teaches her that nothing is permenant and “the living are few but the dead are many”.
What is the story about Anatta?
Nagasena and the chariot.
What happens in the story of Anatta?
Nagasena showed that a chariot is made from a number of different parts (wheels, the carriage, axels, drawbar etc.). The chariot only exists as a combination of these different parts that are constantly changing. There is no singular chariot. And that is the reason why his name was not known.
