Brachial Plexus Flashcards
What Ventral roots are involved in the brachial plexus?
C5-T1
Name the progressive structures formed by the nerves as they exit the spinal chord, form and then leave the brachial plexus
Roots, Trunks, Divisions, Chords, Branches
Robert Tailor Drinks Cold Beers.
What forms the posterior chord, what forms the lateral chord, what forms the medial chord
POSTERIOR- posterior divisions of superior, middle, and inferior trunks. LATERAL - anterior division of superior and middle trunks. MEDIAL- anterior division of the inferior trunk.
The position of the chords are named with respect to what structure?
Axillary artery
What two upper extremity muscles do not receive all of their motor innervation from the brachial plexus?
Levator Scapular (C3, C4) and Trapezius (CN XI)
Radiculopathy is a lesion at what level?
Level of the spinal nerve
Plexopathy is a lesion at what level?
Level of a trunk or chord
Peripheral mononeuropathies is a lesion at what level?
lesion at level of a branch of the bp
What is the group of muscles called that are innervated by the same spinal root?
myotome
What are the three signs of radiculopathy?
Sensory loss, motor loss, reflex signs
What is the notch under the spine of the scapula?
Spinoglenoid notch.
Lesion to Dorsal scapular nerve
Weakness to levator scapulae, rhomboid major and minor, lateral deviation and upward rotation of scapula
Lesion long thoracic nerve
Weakness of serratus anterior, when asked to push against wall you patient displays winged scapula
Suprascapular Nerve lesion
Weakness to supraspinatus and infraspinatus. Weak Abduction and lateral rotation.
Upper and lower subscapular nerve lesion
Weakness of subscapularis and teres major, weak medial rotation and adduction. Difficulty scratching back with back
Thoracodorsal nerve lesion
Loss of motor to latissimus dorsi, weak adduction extension and medial rotation. cant place dorsum of hand on back
Axillary nerve lesion
Deltoid and teres minor, skin of upper and lateral aspect of the arm superficial to deltoid. Weak abduction and flattening of shoulder
What is a common nerve injured in a seatbelt injury?
Pectoral nerve
An ulnar nerve at the axilla causes what?
sensory loss to ulnar innervated areas, and ulnar claw, 4th and 5th MP joints are hyperextended and IP joints are flexed
What hand symptoms does a lesion of the median nerve lead to?
Ape hand
What deformity is observed in upper trunk palsy?
Waiters tip deformity.
What are the main symptoms of a middle trunk paralysis
Radial nerve and extension
What are the symptoms of a lower trunk palsy?
loss of sensation on medial part of arm and loss of flexors in the hands. Lower trunk palsy can also show some horners syndrome effects on the autonomics heading to the neck
What are symptoms of a lateral chord lesion?
loss of sensory to lateral portion of arm, weak flexion of forearm and wrist, digits and pronation.
both musculocutaneous and median affected.
