definition of anxiety
CNS response to physiological and emotional response to a vague sense of threat or danger

what are panic attacks
periodic, short bouts of panic that occur suddenly, reach a peak within minutes and gradually pass
what is panic disorder
anxiety disorder marked by recurrent and unpredictable panic attacks
what are dissociative disorders
disorders marked by major changes in memory that do not have clear physical causes
what is depression
low, sad state marked by significant levels of sadness, lack of energy, low self-worth, guilt or related symptoms
what is mania
state or episode of euphoria or frenzied activity

group of disorders marked by unipolar depression
what is the biological perspective of all disorders
genetic predispositions towards higher levels of anxiety and other disorders
- malfunctioning of brain/hormonal circuits
ex. anxiety = lower levels of GABA

kids face stress and anxiety because they have no awareness and will do anything, see anxiety for consequences of actions

disorders come from problematic behaviors and the way we think about them (dysfunctional thoughts)

what is the sociocultural perspective
poor people are more likely to develop disorders, have naturally higher levels of disorders because of their environment
-less insurance and access to qualified clinicians
what is the humanistic existentialist perspective
disorders come when people do not have honest or accepting perspective of selves, no unconditional positive regard, no allowance for mistakes
humanists think all humans are good
existentialists think that humans are able to have total freedom of their life decisions and outcomes
difference between bipolar one and bipolar two disorder
1 = marked by full manic and depressive episodes 2 = marked by mildly manic (hypomanic) episodes and major depressive episodes
