what are long bones
A
- femora, metacarpals, humerii
- longer than they are wide
- slightly curved
- distribute stress evenly
- cortical bone throughout the shaft
- trabecular bone at the epiphyses

blood supply in bones
A
bones require good blood supply as the calcified matrix does not allow diffusion to happen

what are short bones
A
- mainly trabecular
- thin layer of cortical
- cube shaped
- carpals and tarsals

what are flat bones
A
- cranial, sternum, ribs
- protection and attachment
- thin layer of cortical bone enclosing the trabeculae

what are irregular bones
A
- vertebrae
- bones that don’t fit the other categories
- vary in terms of c:t ratio
- ethmoid bone (separates nasal cavity from brain- located in skull)

what are sesamoid bones
A
- form within tendons
- some are present within everyone e.g. patella
- others are ‘normal’ variants
