***Osteoporosis
-seen more commonly in women
-caused by a sharp decrease in estrogen production during menopause
-decreased osteoblast activity, increased osteoclast activity
***Osteomalacia
-rickets in children
-decreased calcium absorption caused by a vitamin deficiency
-softening of bones
***Osteomyelitis
-bone infection commonly caused by staph
Osteoarthritis
-degenerative joint disease
-usually unilateral on the side that’s used more
-feels better in the morning and gets worse throughout the day
Rheumatoid arthritis
-autoimmune so more common in females
-bilateral
-usually worse in the morning and feels better throughout the day
-autoimmune attacks collagen in bones at joints
-swan neck deformity
Gouty arthritis
-genetic
-more common in males
-caused by uric acid buildup in joints because it isn’t being properly disposed of by the kidneys
Infectious arthritis
lyme disease and gonorrhea
Acromegaly
-body produces too much growth hormone
-head hands and feet continue to grow even after the growth plates close
