What is body compesition?
The relative ratio of fat mass to fat free mass (vital organs, muscle, bones) in the body

What is the skinfold test?
Measure percentage of body fat
What equipment do we need for the skinfold test?
-Skinfold callipers
-an assistant
Where do we measure on male and females?
-males
-chest
-thigh

-supriailic (hips)

How to get the results (skinfold test)?
-add up the sum of your skinfold measurements
-plot your age in years and your total sum of body fat on the j-p nomogram
-join the two points up using a ruler
-read your percentage body fat according to your gender
What is body mass index (bmi)?
Measures whether your weight is appropriate for you height
What are the ratings for men and women for skinfold test?

-very low <7
-slim 7-12
-ideal 13-17
-overweight 18-28

-BIA machine
-alcohol pads
-weighing scales

What does it measure (BIA)?
Percentage of body fat
What are the advantages of BIA?
-only have to uncover the hand and feet less embarrassing then skinfold test
-fairly easy to do for the examiner and participant
What are the disadvantages of the BIA?
-equipment is expensive
-reliability is dependent on hydration, food intake and exercise
What are the advantages of the BMI test?
-Very simple
-no specialist equipment needed
What are the disadvantages of the BMI test?
-Not accurate for muscular individuals
What are the advantages of skinfold testing?
-Accurate test of body fat percentage (unless we take the wrong measurement)
What are the disadvantages of the skinfold testing?
-Can be uncomfortable
-the subject may need to readjust clothing which can be embarrassing
