Blood Supply Of The Brain Flashcards
The brain is supplied by 4 arteries…
2 internal carotid + 2 vertebral arteries
The 2 vertebral arteries ( branches of the subclavian ) converge to form.
The basilar artery
Supplies oxygen to the posterior part of the brain.
The basilar artery
Supply oxygen to the anterior and middle part of the brain.
The ICA
What are the four segments of the ICA ?
- cervical segment.
- petrous segment.
- cavernous segment. ( one branch => hypophyseal arteries )
- supracavernous. ( 5 branches )
What are the 5 branches of the supracavernous segment of the ICA?
- ophthalmic artery.
- anterior cerebral artery.
- middle cerebral artery.
- anterior choroidal artery.
- posterior communicating artery.
Branch of the 1st part of the subclavian artery.
The vertebral artery
What is the anatomical variation of the vertebral artery?
It could arise directly from the arch of aorta
What are the branches of the vertebral arteries?
- meningeal arteries.
- medullary arteries.
- posterior inferior cerebellar arteries (PICA).
- anterior spinal artery.
- posterior spinal artery.
Could arise from the posterior inferior cerebellar artery.
The posterior spinal artery
Could arise from basilar artery.
The posterior inferior cerebellar artery
What are the branches of the basilar artery?
- anterior inferior cerebellar artery.
- labyrinthine artery.
- pontine artery.
- superior cerebellar artery.
- posterior cerebral artery.
could arise from AICA or PICA.
Labyrinthine artery
Form an anastomosis between the internal carotid system and the vertebrobasilar system.
Circle of Willis
The smaller terminal branch of the ICA.
The anterior cerebral artery
