Blood & Bone Marrow Flashcards
What blood protein maintains oncotic pressure?
Albumin
What is the difference between serum and plasma
-Serum is liquid remaining after blood has clotted
-Plasma is liquid in unclotted blood
Where does hematopoiesis primarily occur?
Adult bone marrow
What species utilize the spleen as well as bone marrow for hematopoiesis?
Mouse, Ferret, hedgehog
Where is spongey bone located?
-Proximal ends of long bones
- Flat bones
What cell type give rise to all other blood cells?
Pluripotential stem cells
What is the term for RBC production? WBC? Platelets?
-Erythropoiesis
-Granulopoiesis
-Megakaryopoiesis
What two methods can you use to assess bone marrow?
-Aspirate
-Core biopsy
Which species RBC have nuclei?
Bird, Reptile, Amphibian
What is the most common (numerous) granulocyte? (WBC)
Neutrophils
What is the function(s) of neutrophils?
-First cell type found in any inflammatory reaction
-Essential for defense against bacterial infection
What are the main functions of eosinophils?
-Defense against parasites
-Regulation of allergic reactions
What is the function of basophils?
promote inflammation
How can you differentiate between mast cells and basophils?
-If it is blood, most likely basophil
-If it tissue, most likely mast cell
But make sure to look at nucleus if visible
What are the two agranulocytes?
Monocytes and lymphocytes
What is the role of lymphocytes?
-Important in protection against microbes and neoplasia
What are the two types of lymphocytes and their roles?
-B lymphocytes: Production of antibodies
-T lymphocytes: Destruction of infected or neoplastic cells
What is a plasma cell?
A reactive lymphocyte
Is a platelet a cell?
No, it is a piece of megakeriocyte cytoplasm
Where does lymphocyte production take place? what is the role of the bone marrow?
Mainly takes place in lymph nodes, however the bone marrow provides precursors
What is an immature RBC called?
Reticulocytes
What are the 3 granulocytes?
Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils
What is the difference between monocytes and macrophages?
The cell is called a monocyte in the blood, but a macrophage in the tissues
