Blood Flashcards
What is the main function of blood
Transport
Plasma
90% water along with dissolved compounds
Formed Elemements
Erythrocytes, Leukocytes, Platelets
Thrombocytes
Platelets- Irregular Shaped cell fragments from megakaryocytes
What is the main role of thrombocytes?
Clotting of blood
Erythrocytes
RBC- Biconcave shape
>No nucleus or organelles
>Last around 120 days and are then destoryed by spleen or liver
What is the function of Erythrocytes?
To transport oxygen and to a lesser extent carbon dioxide
Leukocyte
White blood cells
What is the main role for leukocytes?
> Protect Against Infection
Destroy Cancerous Cells
Tissue Repair
What are the different types of leukocytes?
GRANULOCYTES: Granulocytes Neutrophil Eosinophil AGRANULOCYTES: Basophil Monocytes Lymphocytes
Granulocytes
Leukocytes with cytoplasmic granules
Agranulocytes
Leukocytes without cytoplasmic granules
Hemopoiesis
The proliferation and differentiation of the formed elements of blood
Eryhtropoises
Production of new erythrocytes (Around 3m a second)
Hemostais
Prevents the loss of blood when blood vessels are damaged
