Biosecurity at the Farm Level Flashcards
What is biosecurity?
all actions undertaken to prevent disease agents from being introduced to or exiting a specific area or group of animals
Components of biosecurity
- proper animal management/stress reduction
- facility design/traffic flow
- selection and quarantine of new/returning animals
- employee/visitor management
- cleaning and disinfecting
- pest control
- vigilance
Components of proper management and animal stress reduction
- temperature
- ventilation
- stocking density
- all in/out management
How to control temp?
heat sources for neonates and during cold months for outdoor housed adults and fans, sprinklers, misters during hot months
Why is proper ventilation important.
prevent build-up of ammonia dust and or moisture
Stocking density
animals per square foot
Overstocking equals what?
STRESSED animals
How does facility design and traffic flow increase biosecurity?
- isolation of the farm
- ease if effectively cleaning and disinfecting facilities
- drainage and waste disposal
- traffic flow of personnel, vehicles, and equipment
Who should we care for first?
care for healthy neonates first then healthy adults and then sick or isolated animals
Why would isolation of the farm be helpful?
-neighboring farms could carry diseases in through winds
-wildlife could get to it
Selection and quarantine of new and returning animals
-Selection of apparently healthy/disease-free stock
-health certificate
-quarantine if new or sick
Quarantine
-isolation from other animals on farm
-separate care protocols
-length of time depends on species and disease concern
How do you manage your employees and visitors?
- keep a record of everyone coming on or off the farm
- shower in/shower out
- dedicated clothing for that farm only
- footbaths to clean shoes
- hand washing stations
- vehicles management
Cleaning
removing physical debris wash with clean water and soap
Disinfecting
use of chemicals with appropriate spectrum of action to kill all/almost all pathogens
