Biology - Reproduction Flashcards
Is there a fusion of gametes in A sexual reproduction
There is no fusion of gametes in A sexual reproduction and only contains 1 parent. There is no mixing of genetic info leading to genetically identical offspring.
What is mitosis involved in?
Mitosis is only involved in asexual reproduction
What does sexual reproduction involve?
Involves fusion of male and female gametes known as meiosis leading to the formation of non identical cells
Is there a mixing of genetic info in sexual reproduction?
Yes and it leads to the variation of offspring
Heterozygote
Individual with different alleles for a characteristic
Homozygote
Individual two identical alleles for a characteristic
Dominant allele
The phenotype will be apparent in the offspring even if only one of the allele is inherited
Recessive
A phenotype that will only show up in the offspring if both of the alleles coding for that characteristic are inherited
Alleles
Different forms of the same gene sometimes referred to as variants
Genotype
The genetic makeup of an individual for a particular characteristic, for example hair or eye colour.
