Biology - Adaptations, Interdependance And Competition Flashcards
What is a habitat?
An area where organisms live
What are biotic factors?
The interaction of living things
What is a community?
A group of interdependent living organisms in a community
What is interdependence?
When different populations rely on others for certain things
What are abiotic factors?
Non-living elements of the environment Eg. Soil
What is an ecosystem?
Interacting organisms and their environments
What is distribution?
Where particular types of organisms are found within an environment
Why do plants need light?
For photosynthesis, to make food
Why do plants need water?
For photosynthesis and for keeping their tissues rigid and supported
Why do plants need nutrients?
To make all the chemicals they need in their cells
Why do plants need space to grow?
Allows their roots to take in water and nutrients and their leaves to capture light.
Why do plants compete with each other?
Light, space, water and mineral ions.
What makes plants as good as competitors?
Adaptations.
What are structural adaptations?
For example, the shape or the colour of the organism or are part of it
What are behavioural adaptations?
For example, migration to move a better climate for the summer or the winter
