Biology - Homostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis
Keeping an optimum temperature within the body
What do ear receptors detect
Sound and position of the head
What do tounge receptors detect
Chemicals in food
What do skin receptors detect
Temperature on skin
What do the eyes recpetors detect?
Light waves
What do nose repectors dectect?
Chemicals in food
What do receptor cells do?
Covert stimulus into impulses to the brain
What is the difference between sensory and motor neurons
Sensory neurons carry signals to outer parts of the body into the nervous system. Motor neurons carry work the other way around
What is insulin?
Hormone released when blood sugar levels are high
What does it do?
Causes cells to take in more glucose, as cells can respire more and liver can store a portion of the glucose.
What is glucagon?
Ha hormone released when blood sugar levels are high
What does it do?
It causes the liver to turn it into glucose which it intakes and brakes down protein from the amino acids
Where is insulin made?
Pancreas
Were is glucagon made ?
Pancreas
What is type 1 diabetes?
Where your pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin
What causes it?
Usually genetic
What is type 2 diabetes?
Where your cells don’t respond to the insulin given to your body
What causes it?
Lack of exercise or an unhealthy life style. It also is relatively genetic as well
What are the side effects of type 1 diabetes?
Glucose is excreted into your urine making you tired and thirsty. You also feel rather under - nourished.
What are the side effects of type 2 diabetes?
Glucose is also excreted into your urine here. It makes you tired and even more and unhealthy and potentially putting in more weight.
How is type 1 treated?
Shots of insulin after meals to regulate blood sugar levels.
How to treat type 2?
Balanced diet, exercise to lose weight this may restore normal blood sugar levels.
