Biological - Scans Flashcards
2 strengths of post mortem?
- no ethical issues as they are already dead.
- it is performed on humans not animals therefore generalisations can be made.
What is a post-mortem?
examine brains after death
2 weaknesses of post mortem?
- not possible to compare how a person behaved before brain damage afterwards.
- no evidence of brain activity
What is an EEG?
Electrodes are placed all over the scalp and records electrical activity of a part of the brain
2 strengths of an EEG?
(Ethical) safe and painless
(Methodological) used to study differences between left and right sides of the brain
2 weaknesses of EEG?
(Methodological) cannot tell what the person is thinking.
Not very detailed, it only gives a global picture of brain activity.
What is a PET scan?
Head gets put in scanner using a radioactive chemical to measure different parts of the brain.
2 strengths of PET?
- can show different areas of the brain that are activated on different people.
- it is used effectively to diagnose early stages of illnesses such as epilepsy.
2 weaknesses of PET?
- it is expensive
- ethical issue of injecting a radioactive chemical.
