Biochemical tests Flashcards
1
Q
Give an example of a non reducing sugar
A
Sucrose
2
Q
Why is sucrose a non reducing sugar
A
The reducing group (the thing that would usually Reduce the copper sulphate) is involved in the glycosidic bond and therefore sucrose cannot reduce
3
Q
Why can sucrose reduce when acid is added
A
The sucrose becomes hydrolysed (through boiliing with the aicd) breaking the glycosidic bond exposing the reducing group
4
Q
What is the test for Proteins
A
Add biurets
Positive result is blue to purple
