1.9 Enzyme inhibition Flashcards
What is a competitive inhibitor
The are the same shape as the substrate and can bind to the active site. This prevents the substrate from binding and the reaction from occuring
What happens if you add more substrates to a competitive inhibitor
The substrates will out compete the inhibitors knocking them out of the active site
What is a inhibitor
A molecule that binds somewhere on the enzyme preventing it form functioning
What is a non competitive inhibitor
A type of inhibitor where it binds to an enzyme away from the active site
This causes the active site to change shape and therefore the substrate can no longer bind regardless of how many substrates are present/added
Describe and explain the effect of concentration of competitive inhibitors on the rate of enzyme controlled reactions (5)
- As concentration of competitive inhibitors increase the rate if reaction decreases
- This is because they have a similar shape to substrates
- They bind to active sites so substrates cant bind
- As a result there are less ENZYME SUBSTRATE COMPLEXES forming
- Increasing substrate concentration reduces the effect of competitive inhibitors
Describe and explain the effect of concentration of non competitive inhibitors on the rate of enzyme controlled reactions (5)
As concentration of NCI(non comp inhib) increases rate of reaction decreases:
* Binds to another part of the enzyme that is not the active site
* This changes the enzymes tertiary structure/ active site changes
* So now the active site is no longer complimentary to the substrate
* So fewer ENZYME SUBSTRATE COMPLEXES form as substrates cannot bind to the active site
* Increasing substrate conc has no effect on rate of reaction as changes to active site is permanent
When an enzyme/protein dentaures what happens
The IONIC and HYDROGEN bonds break and the tertiary structure changes
Is the shape of a substrate complimentary to a competitive inhibitr
NOOO they are similar but not teh same
