Gardenella Vaginitis - creates a bio film which allows other opportunistic bacteria to survive

Describe the discharge?
A
Thin, white, homogenous

What is the Amstel’s criteria? (4)
A
- Discharge
- PH > 4.5
- Positive whiff test - fishy odour
- Clue cells

What is seen under a microscope?
A
- Clue cells- vaginal epithelial cells are so heavily coated with bacteria that borders are obstructed
- Gram + and Gram - rods and cones only
- Absent large Gram + lactobacilli

- Increases risk of 2nd trimester miscarriage
