B8 - respiration Flashcards
What is the difference between breathing and respiration
Breathing is the intake of oxygen through the lungs, respiration is releasing energy from glucose
Word equation for respiration
Oxygen + glucose —> carbon dioxide + water + energy
Symbol equation for respiration
6O2 + C6H12O6 —> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Where does the energy come from in respiration
The bonds in the glucose
What is energy used for in the body
Make cell material, contract muscles and produce heat
Where does respiration happen
Mitochondria
Why do heart rate and breathing rate increase
To provide you cells with more oxygen for aerobic respiration
Formula for anaerobic respiration
Glucose —> lactic acid + energy
What is anaerobic respiration
Respiration without oxygen, happens when you exercise and don’t have enough oxygen to do aerobic respiration
Why is anaerobic respiration bad
Lactic acid is poisonous
Why do you breathe heavily after exercise
To get oxygen to break down the lactic acid (pay off the oxygen debt)
